Using a driving recorder has become common practice with commercial vehicles such as taxis and trucks. The recorder continually shoots driver behavior and surroundings, providing useful information in the event of an accident.
Ricoh intends to contribute to the safety of the motorized society, and has developed a system that, using image data from a driving recorder, detects conditions that can lead to accidents.
Driving safety can be enhanced by finding unique tendencies of individual drivers and providing those drivers with feedback.
Conditions that can lead to an accident include speeding, neglecting a stop sign, too short an interval between cars, and ignoring traffic signals. Ricoh has developed a system that automatically captures such conditions out of images from the camera.
Determining driving conditions requires a high rate of successful recognition; you need to capture certain features precisely—cars, signals, and signs, for instance. Ricoh utilizes its strength in optics and image processing technologies to improve the accuracy of image recognition.
Ricoh will continue to use its technical assets and study systems that accurately capture surrounding conditions and provide feedback.
