Efforts for Sustainable Raw Material Procurement

Efforts for Sustainable Raw Material Procurement

Policy / Basic Concept

The Ricoh Group together with our suppliers is strengthening our environmental conservation efforts to reduce the environmental burden across the entire supply chain. Our procurement regulations stipulate that raw materials, especially products made of wood, must be obtained legally and with consideration for the sustainability of their origin from both environmental and social perspectives.

To realize a recycling-oriented society, we have set resource conservation policies, provide recycled products, and promote the shift to and proactive use of sustainable resources with low environmental impact. We work with various stakeholders to promote the increased use of recycled materials.

For the procurement of raw material wood, we have established the "Regulations for Ricoh Group products made of wood" and the "Paper Procurement Policy" aiming at the conservation of biodiversity, prevention of deforestation, and respect for workers' human rights. In line with the sustainable procurement framework (ISO20400), we promote sustainable procurement certified by Ricoh and certifications such as FSC, and advance activities towards zero deforestation in cooperation with stakeholders.

System / Structures

To continuously discuss medium- to long-term issues in the environmental, social, and governance fields at the management level, in May 2018 the Ricoh Group established the ESG Committee, which is chaired by the CEO. The committee meets quarterly with the participation of executive management to discuss the status of initiatives, issues, and investment decisions in the supply chain, including raw material procurement, which is an important management theme. The contents of the discussions are regularly reported to the Board of Directors, which oversees the execution of ESG management at the highest level.

Initiatives

To reduce the environmental and social impacts of raw material procurement, we request suppliers and partners to sign the Supplier Code of Conduct. In FY2023, we had a 97% signing rate. Additionally, we monitor compliance through regular SAQs and encourage necessary improvements. For raw material timber procurement, we conduct surveys with suppliers to pursue traceability of logging sites.

The Purchasing Department conducts "ESG Procurement Training" to understand sustainable raw material procurement and purchasing activities that consider environmental and social aspects.
