Environmental data ― Scope 3 GHG emissions for FY2012

Ricoh introduced the methodology known as Eco Balance in fiscal 1998 to clarify and effectively reduce the environmental impact caused by all its businesses. By using this method, we have been making lifecycle environmental impact evaluations.
Recently, in response to the increased need to clarify our environmental impact, a range of guidelines have been formulated*1. In reference to these guidelines, we have calculated our Greenhouse Gas emissions based on the Eco Balance concept and also calculated Greenhouse Gas emissions from the supply chain as our Scope 3 emissions.

These calculations have revealed that Scope 3 emissions account for as much as 85.2% of total emissions.

The results also show that cat 1, 4 and 11 emissions are large among the Scope 3 categories. We will regard these categories as important and work to reduce emissions while also striving to improve the accuracy of our calculations. In fiscal 2012, in order to increase the credibility of calculation results, we received third-party verification from Bureau Veritas Japan of calculation results for cat 1 and 11 emissions for imaging products. (For details, please click here .)

We will continue to clarify and disclose our Scope 3 emissions results and will work to reduce emissions in important categories.

  • *1For Cat 1 emissions, we received third-party verification totaling 318,000 t-CO2.
  • *2For Cat 11 emissions, we received third-party verification totaling 440,000 t-CO2.
  • *Inaccuracies have been identified in the data reported in the past, and corrections have been made with the reporting of fiscal 2013 data.

Approach to Calculation and the Calculation Method

In reference to multiple guidelines, we have calculated the amount of emissions based on product life, operation hours, various per-unit emission indices, and emission factors set based on our own data. In the future, we will review the calculation method, emission factors, and boundaries to increase calculation accuracy.

Calculation method for each of the categories

Cat1 Calculate by multiplying the total amount of purchased resources by the emission factor for each of the materials
Cat2 Calculate by multiplying the annual amount of capital investment by the emission factor
Cat3 Calculate by multiplying annual energy consumption by the emission factor
Cat4 Calculate for the transportation of cargo shipped by the Ricoh Group (excluding emissions included in Scope 1 and 2 totals)
Cat5 Calculate by multiplying the amount of waste sent to final disposal sites from the manufacturing facilities by the emission factor
Cat6 Calculate for the entire Group based on Ricoh Co., Ltd.’s data (for Japan) and on data from sales companies in Europe (for overseas)
Cat7 Calculate for the entire Group based on Ricoh Co., Ltd.’s data
Cat8 Calculate emissions from leased offices (excluding leased devices, automobiles, etc., since these are included in Scope 1 and 2 totals) based on the number of people
(Also excluding emissions from leased offices that are included in Scope 1 and 2 totals)
Cat9 Calculate emissions from the transportation of products that are not shipped by the Ricoh Group
Cat10 Calculate by multiplying the amount of products that are not final products by the emission factor
Cat11 Calculate based on the assumed usage and life of the sold products
Cat12 Calculate based on the weight of the sold products and LCA data on emissions from the disposal of Ricoh products
Cat13 Calculate emissions from the use of assets leased by the Ricoh Group’s leasing company (Ricoh Leasing) based on the per-category quantity and emission factor. (Exclude emissions from leased Ricoh products that are included in cat 11 emissions and emissions from assets leased to the Ricoh Group that are included in Scope 1 and 2 totals)
Cat14 Not applicable (The Ricoh Group has no emissions from this category.)
Cat15 Calculate based on emissions from the companies of which Ricoh Co., Ltd. owns shares as well as based on the shareholding ratio
