Ricoh to Participate in the Japan Climate Leaders Program

Tokyo, July 31, 2009--Ricoh Company, Ltd. (President & CEO: Shiro Kondo) has announced that it will participate in the Japan Climate Leaders Program (Japan-CLP), which was launched on July 30, 2009.
Japan-CLP is a group of companies that has been formed based on the idea that with the global environment facing a huge crisis brought about by climate change due to the increase in greenhouse gases, industry must begin taking vigorous action to achieve sustainable economic development with a strong sense of urgency.
Ricoh has decided to participate in the Japan-CLP program to “raise awareness of the problem of climate change and make a statement about this issue,” based on the concept that all of society must change in order to lower the impact on the environment.
By participating in the Japan-CLP program, Ricoh hopes to accelerate progress on achieving the high targets for environmental impact reduction activities undertaken by Ricoh Group together with its customers and suppliers. Ricoh aims to work with all of society to achieve a flourishing society, economy and global environment

Ricoh President Shiro Kondo made the following commitment in a message regarding Ricoh’s participation in Japan-CLP.

Message from CEO/President
Global environmental problems bring with them enormous risks that are also critical risks for enterprise management. If we delay our actions, society will suffer considerable economic losses. In order to sustain human society and avoid catastrophic economic losses, it is necessary for enterprises and society as a whole to tackle climate changes immediately. Furthermore, in order to accelerate such actions, we must inevitably transform society itself.
Although it is almost impossible to promote social transformation through the action of a single enterprise, we believe it makes sense for same-minded corporations to take actions under a “common vision”, and send a positive message to society.

In the “Common visions” of the Japan-CLP, there are still some items that our company must make efforts to achieve, but we will do our utmost to meet these targets by various means including the development of environmental technologies.

A global leader in digital office solutions, Ricoh provides a wide range of office products including copiers, networked multifunctional printers, as well as sophisticated customized service and support.

The Ricoh Group considers environmental problems to be one of the most important management issues. As regards the prevention of global warming, we are aiming to reduce the total CO2 emission (including the converted value of 5 gasses) by 87.5% by FY2050, and 30% by FY2020, compared to FY2000.

Activities for achieving the above targets comprise the following:.
· Develop technologies that improve the environmental functions of products and facilitate the use of such products.
· Make suggestions to customers to help them fully enjoy the environmental functions of our products.
· Realize "low carbon manufacturing" through innovation of production processes.
· Reduce CO2 emissions at the procurement stage by making products smaller and their lives longer to promote their recycling.
· Support suppliers in their environmental impact reduction measures.
· Obtain more accurate information on CO2 emissions during the distribution stage, increase distribution efficiency, and promote a modal shift.

At the Ricoh Group we do our utmost to disclose all the information concerning the above activities.
Furthermore, we will participate in related discussions on a global level and continue to communicate vigorously with our stakeholders.
