Manufacturing affiliate Ricoh Asia Industry (Shenzhen) Ltd. (RAI) has been regularly removing an exotic plant called Mikania micrantha from a park near its factory since 2004. Mikania micrantha is sometimes referred to as a killer plant because of its characteristic of tangling up in plants, depriving the plants of water and sunshine and killing them. Many parks in Shenzhen, where the company is located, have been damaged because of Mikania micrantha. Roughly 20 RAI employees began removing the plant in 2004 in order to contribute to the environmental preservation of the local community.
