Profile of Daido Moriyama
Daido Moriyama was born in Osaka in 1938. He worked as a freelance graphic designer and then as an assistant to photographers Takeji Iwamiya and Eikoh Hosoe before setting up on his own in 1964. In 1968 he released the photo collection Nippon Gekijo Shashincho, which broke new ground with a style of photography that came to be known as "bure, boke, are" (blurry, out-of-focus, grainy). Since that time, he has tried to both expand the concept of the "photograph" to the greatest degree possible and to tear down existing restrictions. The recipient of international critical acclaim, Moriyama has had many large-scale exhibitions overseas, including a retrospective that was first shown at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1998 and subsequently toured the U.S. for two years, and a solo exhibition held at the Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain in Paris in 2003.
A message from Daido Moriyama
It has been about thirty years since my last photo exhibition in Ginza, an area I was very fond of long ago. I think that this turn of fate must be the result of my use of a Ricoh camera as my favorite over the past 10 years. I am looking forward to seeing how my photographed world looks in the glass-walled space of RING CUBE above the colorful, fashionable streets of Ginza.
