On 15th of November 2015 a volunteer group from Lagoa dos Gatos city went to the Reserve and planted 200 saplings at the benchmark area (Pictures 1 and 2). They returned in 24th of January 2016 to keep the grass cleaned around the saplings planted.

Guided tours to the reserve

On 31st of January 2016 there was a reencounter at the Reserve with the environmental monitors that were part of the environmental education programme from 2009 to 2012. They started to attend the activities with 12-13 years old and now they are 20 years old. Some of them are in the university and others are teachers at Lagoa dos Gatos city. During the visit they planted 9 saplings to enrich degraded areas at Reserve and they were remembering about the activities that they took part and the most special one was when they guided their parents in the trails (Pictures 1 and 2). The teachers are very interested in take their students this year to have a field class in the forest. They related that was great to be at the reserve again and to meet all the good friends from the past. Building up the future

Training on the techniques of handling and maintenance of the mill had been conducted. The training focused on six (06) members of the grinding mill management committee. The workshop provided the beneficiaries with requisite skills to use as well as maintain the mill. The aim was to ensure a professional management of the mill by the committee.

On the second session, this one focus on the 15 indigenous trainers that trained other 60 women. All the sixty women trained were able to build and use their improved stoves.
In total, 205 women were trained and 249 improved stoves were built and used on a forecast of 100 women to be trained as planned at the beginning of the project.
In OURSI VILLAGE, a floor of 12m2 was constructed around the building sheltering the mill. This terrace will be useful for drying of cereals before or after grinding.

Training course to local nature guides

As the Serra do Urubu project determined that the ecotourism is one of the main activities in the reserve, a training course on interpretative trials was promoted to Lagoa dos Gatos, local community. On May 18th and 20th, the training course on nature guides for Lagoa dos Gatos’ residents was conducted. The training was leaded by Save Brasil team in partnership with a local Tourism Agency. This training course will enable to employ the local community members as nature guides in the reserve when it is needed and it is a way of increasing the local pride and raise awareness on the Serra do Urubu’s importance.

“The training course on interpretative trails gave us a unique opportunity of getting in touch with nature and also raising the feeling of responsibility for the conservation of Serra do Urubu. SAVE Brasil can always count on our support.”, says the participants.

Installation of grinding mill

In April 2015, Naturama purchased and installed a Rhino Diesel 10 HP grinding mill. The grinding mill is operated by a cooperative comprising of 6 women and it operates for 8 hours a day. It has capacity to grind 50 bags per day. An approximate 150 women and children have access to the mill. Three types of grain (millet, sorghum and maize) are ground on a daily basis. Approximately 500 bags of 5 Kgs of grain ground between the months of April 2015 to date and an estimated 150 000 CFA (253 USD) of income has been earned, at a rate of 12 500 CFA (25 USD) per week. Members of the cooperative are using the money generated to pay school fees as well as purchase school uniforms for their children.

Mangrove planting and preparation

800 seedings were planned to be planted during the training program, introduced in last month. However, prior to the conduct of the training, they were already over grown. So, we have decided to plant them before the training. 40 new seedings were planted instead, during the training. And we are now preparing the required 3,500 seedings for additional planting before August planting.

We will make another report on actual planting soon.

A two-day mangrove restoration training for the local participants is made in the restoration area in Infanta, Quezon Province.
The main objective is to equip the participants with knowledge and skills in restoring and conserving the remaining mangrove forests in the municipality.20 women and 20 men have attended the 2 day training program.

On the 1st day, lectures on ecology and biodiversity, mangrove ecosystems and nursery establishment were made in a meeting area of Infanta Municipal Government. On the 2nd day, participants are involved in demonstration of nursery establishment and planiting, maintenance and protection at the planting site.
Participants expressed their commitment to protect and conserve mangrove ecosystem at the end of the training program.

Preparation for grinding mill and educational activities
Installation of grinding mill

Construction of a building to shelter the grinding mill was contracted out to a company. The installation of the grinding mill is planned after the construction of the building. Meanwhile, in order to ensure an effective and transparent management of the mill, project team and the site support group have established a board of management. The board of management is composed of 6 women of the group of site and will ensure the daily management of the mill.

Educational activities are carried out in 15 villages for 522 people in collaboration with local forest service of the environment. Topics are selected in accordance with the situation of each village. The 522 people including 76 female learned about one of following topics on nature conservation.

  • Pollution of the Oursi by solid waste and the quality of water
  • Relation between the overgrazing and the degradation of pastural resources
  • Relation between the degradation of the banks of the Oursi and its early drying up
  • Logging trees and degradation of the pastural and agricultural resources
  • Durable mode of consumption
  • Avian fauna in ecosystem of Oursi

Installation of energy saving stoves

50 energy efficient stoves are installed in 11 villages including Oursi between August and December 2014.
Prior to the installation, educational sessions were held by the agent of the environment of Oursi under the supervision of the provincial director of the environment of the province of Oudalan.
The session was devided into 3 phases. In the first phase, the recipient women were informed of the importance of energy saving stoves in terms of (i) reduction of the quantity of wood used, (ii) reduction in the wood drudgeries, (iii) hygiene in the cooking of food, (iv) protection of the women’s health. After the theoretical phase, demonstration of preparation and installation of stove is made by the trainer. At the end, the women practiced what was demonstrated with assistance of the trainer.
After the sessions, 50 stoves are installed in the recipients’ home and they continued the activity at the level of their household.
The project in Burkina Faso is operated by NATURAMA.

Students tour to the Reserve

Four educational activities with guided tours to the Reserve and tree planting were conducted over 4 days. 157 students participated in the activities. In the activities, 185 trees were planted in the Reserve and in the town of Lagoa dos Gatos. The guided tour follows trails with guides who inform students about the importance of the Reserves.

Some students commented that it was their first time walking in the forest and it was an exciting experience to join the activities.

Selection of benchmark location

A benchmark location was selected in the Reserve to monitor the change throughout the projects. The area is around the Reserve’s facilities and currently used as water fountain. The area will be restored with native plant species along with other locations in the Reserve, Serra do Urubu.

The arrangements required for actual reforestation are being made in Infanta, Philippines.

MOA signing ceremony

October 10, 2014 the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed by Haribon Foundation, the Municipal Government of Infanta, Sangguniang Barangay of Dinahican and the partner PO, -the Maralitang Mangingisda ng Munting Sabang Association (MMMSA).

Delineation

The delineation activity was conducted in order to find the most degraded site, which would be the reforestation site in this project.
With the activity, the area that we will plant trees first are decided out of 10 potential areas. We are making boundary arrangement of the project site with local community now.

Local students' field trip to the Reserve

Field Trip to the Reser ve with Students from Local School

A group of 25 students between 12 and 14 years old and 4 teachers, from Cordeiro Filho Municipal School, in Lagoa dos Gatos, visited the Reserve during a field trip. It was the firstexperience in the forest for the students. So it was a very unique experience for them.
In the reserve, the project team explained about the reserve, the forest and its species while they walked in one of the trails. Also the student had the opportunity to plant trees. The teachers also planted trees, and some of the students even planted more than one.

In the following days, the project’s team visited two more schools in the neighboring town of Jaqueira, where we presented the Reserve to 720 students. The aim of this visit was to present the Reserve to the students, and invite their teachers to schedule a visit to the forest with this group in the near future. We are now arranging their visit and looking for more local students visit.
