WEC Gold Medal

Presentation Ceremony

What is the World Environment Center (WEC)?
Headquartered in New York, WEC is a nonprofit, non-advocacy organization founded in 1974 with seed funding from the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP). WEC promotes the exchange environmental information and expertise among industry, governments, nongovernmental organizations, the scientific community, and civil society.

 What are the WEC's missions?
For the past 28 years, WEC has worked to improve the industrial and urban environment, along with health and safety policy and practices.

The Center fulfills its mission through four complementary programs:
1.The International Environment Forum(IEF)
This group of multinational companies meets several times a year to discuss sustainable development, the environment, health, safety, resource management, and corporate responsibility issues with senior policymakers from around the world. IEF sponsor companies can also take part in professional development workshops, special projects, and meetings of the WEC International Corporate Responsibility (ICSR) Task Team.

2.WEC Gold Medal for International Corporate Achievement in Sustainable Development
The World Environment Center Gold Medal for International Corporate Environmental Achievement was established in 1985 to recognize industry leadership and contributions to worldwide environmental stewardship. The award was later renamed the Gold Medal for International Corporate Achievement in Sustainable Development to honor multinationals for their efforts to meet broader health, safety, and social goals, as well as for their environmental achievements.

3.International Technical Assistance Programs
Since 1982, WEC has provided pro-bono and reduced-fee expertise to eligible countries in energy efficiency, pollution control, and other areas. Projects make use of goods and services contributed by industry, governments, nongovernmental organizations, and academia. To date, WEC has implemented projects in 45 countries though thInternational Environment and Development Service (IEDS).

4.International Corporate Social Responsibility initiative
The WEC's International Corporate Social Responsibility (ICSR) initiative was launched in 2000 as a way for corporate environmental and sustainability managers to explore social and environmental responsibility issues and to identify solutions. The ICSR program is multidisciplinary, involving experts from industry, academia, and NGOs.
 How is WEC founded?
