Masamitsu Sakurai, president of Ricoh, was awarded the Mainichi Economic Management Award (organized by the Mainichi Shimbun and a judging committee headed by economy critic Toshihiko Yoshino). The presentation ceremony took place at Josui Kaikan in Tokyo.
Mr. Sakurai was chosen winner because of his strong resolve push through the idea that "environmental protection is equal in importance to profit-earning activities," organizing a leading environmental activity with full employee participation, and at the same time posting high profits for the 8th consecutive term, for the term ending March 2002."
The award, now in its 22nd year, is given to top business leaders who bring a breath of fresh air into industrial circles with their outstanding management skills and who contribute to Japan through social and cultural activities.
