Ricoh Australia participates in Earth Hour
Ricoh Australia participated in the Earth Hour campaign to turn off lights in Sydney on 31 March. All lights in Ricoh’s offices were turned off.
Earth Hour is one part of a campaign aimed at reducing Australia’s greenhouse emissions by 5% in 2007. All lights were to be turned off during the one-hour period from 7:30pm to 8:30pm on 31 March. Earth Hour was sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund Australia and the Sydney Morning Herald.
On the day of the event, more than 2 million people participated, reducing electric power consumption in the Sydney Central Business District by approximately 10%, the equivalent of about a 25% reduction in carbon dioxide.
The Sydney and Canberra branches of Ricoh Australia participated, actively encouraging employees to participate through measures such as putting up Earth Hour posters. Employees checked to see that the power was turned off on all lighting and other electrical equipment in the offices, with the Earth Hour event making a small but significant contribution to reducing excess use of electricity.
