European Environment Conference Held
The European Environment Conference was held on June 2 at the Drinto Softel hotel in Schiphol in the Netherlands.
Forty-nine people in charge of the environment and recycling from 27 sales companies and production-related companies in 15 countries in the European region participated in the conference. Mr. Sakai, managing director of environmental promotion; Mr. Sasaki, chairman of REBV, or the European Regional Headquarters; Mr. Saito, president of the NRG Group; and others participated in the conference.
Environmental and recycling conditions in the European region were explained, and policies regarding environmental and recycling activities were presented. Mr. Brookner, chairman of the Environmental Committee under Japan Business Council in Europe, gave a lecture on environmental laws and regulations in the EU.
The participants held group discussions about environmental marketing, the collection of used products, and activities to reduce CO2. They were all serious in actively expressing their opinions on the compliance of relevant measures with the Kyoto Protocol and upcoming WEEE & RoHS directives.
Like the previous year's conference, this year's conference took the "carbon neutral" approach, which means that the CO2 generated by the conference was completely offset by the planting of trees. This year's conference was made shorter than the previous conference, one day instead of two, with the idea that a shorter conference translates to less CO2 emissions. The chosen venue was near the airport in Amsterdam, which is near Europe's midpoint. As a result, CO2 emissions more than halved, from 27.5 tons in the previous year to 11 tons.
