"European Environmental Meeting 2005" in Italy to be held Carbon Neutral

With "Environment is our business" as its theme, the "European Environmental Meeting 2005" (EEM05) was held on May 25 and 26 in Stresa, close to Milan, Italy. The meeting attracted 62 participants from Japanese and European HQ as well as representatives from 29 Ricoh Family Group sales and manufacturing subsidiaries from 15 European countries. Next to Environment and recycling policy in the European region also progressive approaches were presented by successful subsidiaries. External speakers from Future Forrest & MIREC/SIMMS made presentation on the reduction of CO2 emissions and measures to cope with the WEEE Directive*. Further, participants were divided into groups to exchange views on how to reduce CO2 emissions as sales company. They also discussed effective measures towards WEEE directive. During the evening program , "The European Sustainability Award 2004" was presented to Lanier (Schweiz) AG, for their business case approach of successfully reducing CO2 emission together with cut in fuel cost.

As a primer, The European Environmental Meeting or the first time was Carbon neutral since total CO2 generated in relation to the conference was compensated. For this effort, the amount of the CO2 emitted from transport facilities the participants used and from the electricity used at the conference venue was calculated to be 55 tons of CO2 for which 275 trees were planted in Germany to absorb the emission.

* WEEE Directive
The directive was set forth by the European Union for the purpose of reducing the consumption of resources and mitigating environmental pollution by waste electrical and electronic equipment. It requires the collection and recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment by producers.
