Environmental Label (Japan)
Nikkei Ecology, April 2002 |
13 laser printer models immediately acquired Eco-Mark certification. I will talk about Ricoh's striving for environmental labels. |

Based on the criteria newly established in October 2001, Ricoh has acquired the printer Eco-Mark for 13 models of the laser printer "IPSiO" series including conventional models. While old criteria used to focus only on waste reduction, the new criteria aims for higher environmental impact reduction efficiency, in consideration of the whole life cycle from resource acquisition to recycling. As the certified model can carry the Eco-Mark attached to the main body, customers can easily identify environmentally sound products. The acquisition of Eco-Mark by the "IPSiO" series will respond to ever increasing green purchase needs among customers.

| Environmental activity is globally promoted. Production system is established in correspondence to the criteria of each country. |

In addition to Japan's Eco-Mark, Ricoh is actively striving for acquisition of environmental label certification of each country of the world, such as the German Blue Angel Mark and the Nordic Swan Mark. We have established much stricter voluntary criteria than each country's labeling criteria for ozone or product noise and have been promoting environmental impact reduction during the whole life cycle of the product.
It is because we consider that development of environmental activities from a global viewpoint is needed to realize environmental impact reduction more efficiently.
Thanks to this, we were successful in the earliest correspondence in the industry to certification acquisition of the printer Eco-Mark in Japan.

| Conventional models also conform to new criteria and smoothly clear the strict specifications. |

New Eco-Mark criteria specify in detail the requirements covering the whole life cycle of the printer, from use of recovered plastic materials, the factory's compliance with environmental provisions and noise level, down to specifications of the operation manual.
Ricoh had long been developing products under stricter voluntary criteria, so almost all the requirements were met by the products already put on the market.
Also, concerning the criteria applied to other countries' production sites, as measures had been taken, common with the domestic facilities, the environmental label criteria would not be an obstacle. Additional data presentation from the suppliers alone successfully did the job. Not only for the new models but also for conventional models, easy response like merely changing operation manual specifications enabled the products to acquire the Eco-Mark.

| Environmental activity that looks one step ahead will realize higher level environmental business management |
 |
Ricoh has been introducing various environmentally sound products to the market.
In the future, we will use the Eco-Mark and others to more clearly communicate with customers that the products are suitable for green purchase and conduct activities to have the products used by more people.
Further, we will promote the use of environmental labels in Thailand and other foreign countries. It is because we consider that popularization of environmental labels improves customer environmental awareness and is connected to market expansion. If the system arrangement was made after environment criteria were established, we would lose business opportunities.
Always to look one step ahead and to actively strive for the environment in the whole business area will realize environmental business management with high economic efficiency. Also, for the future, Ricoh, as a globally active environmentally advanced business entitys will practice higher quality environmental business management.
