1990 - 1999: Taking up the Environmental Challenge




Jul. 1990 Completed construction of REI Georgia plant in suburbs of Atlanta as fourth plant for Ricoh Electronics, Inc.


Sept.1990 Founded overseas subsidiary Ricoh Italia S.p.A.

Dec. 1990 Establishes the Environmental Administration Office to monitor the environmental effects of the Ricoh Group's manufacturing processes and products.

1991 Starts the ISO9000 Corporate Committee, a company wide organization for obtaining ISO9000 series certification.

Jan. 1991 Founded Ricoh Asia Industry (Shenzhen) Ltd. (RAI) in China to manufacture OA equipment.

Mar. 1991 Founded Dong Guan Tailien Optical Co., Ltd. in Shenzhen, China, to manufacture parts for compact cameras.

Apr. 1991 Ricoh California Research Center developed world's fastest color imaging compression algorithm.

Aug. 1991 Completed Ricoh's Olympic Fax Network to connect International Olympic Committee (IOC) to Olympic family.

1992 Becomes an Olympic Games sponsor in the facsimile machine category and starts building the Olympic Fax Network to link the global Olympic family.

Feb. 1992 Enacted Ricoh General Principles on the Environment to clarify Ricoh Group's position on environmental preservation.

May 1992 Created thermal paper plant in Ricoh Industrie France S.A.

Jun. 1992 Completed construction of OPC system at Ricoh Numazu plant.

Sept.1992 Ricoh Unitechno Co., Ltd. became first subsidiary of Ricoh Group to obtain ISO 9002 certification, followed by Atsugi Plant and Gotemba Plant; efforts in certification continued in accordance with a Company wide development plan, which included both domestic and overseas operations.
Initiated full-scale entrance into CD business as part of efforts to address multimedia.

Apr. 1993 Ricoh UK Products Ltd. (RPL) became inaugural recipient of Queen's Award for Environmental Achievement.

Oct. 1993 Signed Olympic Fax Network supplier contract with IOC.
Founded joint venture company Shanghai Ricoh Facsimile Co., Ltd. in China.
Founded joint venture company RPG Ricoh Ltd. in Bombay, India (disbanded in May 1998, and name changed to Ricoh India Limited).

Dec. 1993 Initiated an internal project to promote entrepreneurial spirit.

May 1994 RPL received Highly Recommended prize in European Better Environment Awards for industry '94 for chlorofluocarbon-free recycling system.

Oct. 1994 Initiated nationwide development of long-distance diagnostic service for copiers in Japan.

Mar. 1995 Won top award from Japan's Minister of International Trade and Industry for environmental activities, product assessment and recyclable design.
Ricoh Corporation makes Savin Corporation a wholly owned sales subsidiary.

May 1995 RICOH R1 compact camera was awarded Camera Grand Prix '95 Special Prize.


Sept.1995 Acquired NRG Group PLC (formerly Gestetner Holdings PLC) of United Kingdom to reinforce overseas sales network.

Dec. 1995 Gotemba Plant obtained ISO/DIS 14001 certification, draft version of international standard for environmental management.

Apr. 1, 1996 Hiroshi Hamada appointed chairman; Masamitsu Sakurai appointed president.

Jun. 1996 Environmental Protection Agency of United States awarded Ricoh Corporation with ENERGY STAR Award (received five years running until 2000).

Jul. 1996 Inaugurated Aficio as unified global brand for Ricoh products.

Nov. 1996 Launched production of CD-RW discs.


Dec. 1996 Formed Ricoh Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. in Singapore.

Feb. 1997 Established Ricoh Kanto Recycling Center to disassemble and separate recycled PPCs for energy reduction and recycling.

Mar. 1997 Founded Ricoh Silicon Valley, Inc. in California.

Oct. 1997 Formed joint venture company Mitsui-Ricoh CIS Ltd. in Russia with Mitsui & Co., Ltd.
Established Ricoh Latin America, Inc. in United States to manage sales in Central and South America.

Feb. 1998 RIFAX BL110 Shataro2 facsimile machine was awarded Japan Machinery Federation President's Award at 18th Energy Saving Excellent Awards.

Aug. 1998 RAI became first Japanese-owned facsimile machine manufacturer to reach 1,000,000 unit production mark.

Dec. 1998 Awarded first place in second annual Environmental Management Survey by Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Japan's top business daily (received three years running until 2000).

Jan. 1999 Merged Ricoh Technonet Co., Ltd. (Tokyo), Ricoh Technonet Co., Ltd. (Osaka) and Ricoh Information Systems Co., Ltd., to form Ricoh Technosystems Co., Ltd.

May 1999 Awarded Minister of International Trade and Industry Prize in eighth annual Global Environment Awards from Japan Industrial Journal.

Dec. 1999 Received Japan Quality Award.
