1972 - 1979: The Birth of Office Automation




1972 Markets the RICOH PPC900, Ricoh's first dry-electrostatic-transfer plain-paper poster.

Jan. 1973 Founded manufacturing subsidiary Ricoh Electronics Co., Ltd. (REI) in America (currently Irvine Plant).

Apr. 1973 RIFAX 600S, first office facsimile machine, transmits world's first international high-speed facsimile transmission, between Tokyo and New York via satellite communications.


Apr. 1973 Founded Hasama Tohoku Ricoh Co., Ltd. (name changed to Hasama Ricoh, Inc. in Sept. 1977)

May 1973 Founded overseas subsidiary Rapifax Corp. in America for marketing of facsimiles (name changed to Rapicom, Inc. in Mar. 1978).

Jul. 1973 Founded Ricoh Optical Industries Co., Ltd. in Iwate Prefecture.

Feb. 1975 Launches the RICOPY DT1200, a wet-type plain-paper machine that becomes the world's top-selling copier.

Nov. 1975 Is the first company in the office automation industry to win the coveted Deming Prize for excellence in quality control.


Jul. 1976 RIFAX 600S played active role in Montreal Olympic Game.

Oct. 1976 President Mikio Tatebayashi passed away.
Shinichi Miyoshi appointed chairman (until Jun. 27, 1980)
Takeshi Ouye appointed president (until Mar. 31, 1983)


Dec. 1976 Established Ricoh Credit Co., Ltd. (name changed to Ricoh Lease Co., Ltd. in Apr. 1984)

Mar. 1977 Completed construction and operations began at Aoyama Headquarters.

Apr. 1977 Introduces the acronym OA, for office automation, at CeBIT in Hannover.


1978 Starts overseas sales of copiers under the Ricoh name to augment original equipment manufacturer brands. The Ricoh name is now synonymous with quality and cost performance.

Jul. 1978 Founded overseas subsidiary Ricoh Deutschland GmbH in Germany.
Completed construction of Numazu R&D Center.

Dec. 1978 Founded Ricoh Business Machines, Ltd. in Hong Kong (name changed to Ricoh Hong Kong Ltd. in Jul. 1987).

May 1979 Established overseas subsidiary Ricoh Systems, Inc. in California to carry out R&D (later merged with Ricoh Corporation in Apr. 1987).

Jul. 1979 Formed Materials R&D Center at Numazu R&D Center (name changed to Chemical Products R&D Center in Jan. 1990).
