The Document Highway

With the rush into the broadband era, the role of documents has undergone massive changes. We are becoming less restricted by the boundaries of space or time. It is now possible to exchange necessary information at anytime from anywhere through a diverse range of equipment that is connected to a network.![]() Looking hard at how to optimize the style of communication, in early 2001 Ricoh proposed an architecture platform (The Document Highway) that would function as the foundation (for the new broadband network). The function of the proposed network would be that of an (information) highway on which documents, like cars on a real highway, travel back and forth through a variety of equipment and servers acting as service stations. The Document Highway concept champions an open architecture that will help bring Image Communication to full fruition by delivering appliance-like ease. Ricoh's plan for The Document Highway is based upon the following four policies:
The equipment and PC software will be combined to specifically meet the needs of individual users, thus offering ideal solutions for their document processing. Making use of the customer's existing system and infrastructure, construction of the integrated solutions is simple. In particular, Internet application integration is easy with the service station function, which is offered as Web services. Taking full advantage of broadband technologies, it will allow users to exchange information across the Internet and other networks anywhere in the world, through wired or wireless communications. That is to say, the realization of ubiquitous document(ation). Ricoh is not only adapting its products, including equipment and software, to function on The Document Highway, but the company is also striving to reinforce it. The Document Highway is ultimately about providing people with powerful solutions to their document creation and management needs. It is not just a work in progress. Once the infrastructure is completely up and running, we envisage this road stretching forever. |
