Setting goals using the back-casting method

To the Ricoh Group, a sustainable society is one that pursues a The Ps Balance—Planet (environment), People (society) and Profit (economic activities)—and reduces the environmental impact of society to a level that the Earth’s self-recovery capabilities can manage.
This future ideal requires high targets, viewed from the long term, and consistent efforts to reach stated goals.

Measures to mitigate climate change

The Ricoh Group considers its commitment to climate change issues as one of its most important business responsibilities and a top priority area within a materiality matrix. In addition, we enthusiastically endorse solutions that address climate change issues and help realize a low-carbon society.
Going forward, we will step up our efforts to provide energy-saving products and solutions and activities to reduce our own greenhouse gas emissions. We will strive to grow our businesses while promoting environmental management aimed at reaching our Mid-and Long-Term Environmental Impact Reduction Goals.

Ricoh Group mid- and long-term environmental impact reduction goals

Energy conservation and prevention of global warming

Reduce the total lifecycle CO2 emissions by the Ricoh Group by 30% by 2020 and by 87.5% by 2050 from the 2000 level

Resource conservation and recycling

1. Reduce the new input of resources by 25% by 2020 and by 87.5% by 2050 from the 2007 level

2. Reduce the use of or replace the major materials of products that are at high risk of depletion(e.g., crude oil, copper and chromium) by 2050

Pollution prevention

Minimize risks of chemical substances throughout the product lifecycle by 2020 in compliance with the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM)

Four pillars for environmental impact reduction

To achieve a sustainable society, it is necessary to limit environmental impact to a level that fits within the Earth's self-recovery capabilities. Therefore, the Ricoh Group's sustainable environmental management focuses on four pillars: energy conservation and prevention of global warming, resource conservation and recycling, pollution prevention, and biodiversity conservation. The first three pillars aim to reduce environmental impact from our business activities, while the fourth pillar aims to improve the Earth’s self-recovery capabilities.

Points of the 18th Environmental Action Plan

Reduce environmental impact exerted by our customers
  • Excellent energy-saving performance recognized with winning the annual award for energy-saving features of color MFPs for the second straight year
  • Reduced CO2 emissions by 453,000 tons (equivalent to 1.4 times the total amount of CO2 emitted from Ricoh Group factories around the world) through the provision of videoconferencing systems, paperless solutions, and other products/services
Enhance cooperation with stakeholders
  • We provided remanufactured machines and solutions (personal authentication, on-demand printing, and equipment management) as an official partner of the 21st Conference of Parties of the United Nations’ Framework in Climate Change (COP21)
  • We participated in COP21 as a member of the Japan Climate Leaders’ Partnership, exchanging views with businesses, governments, and policymakers
  • We participated in We Mean Business, a network of more than 500 global companies, encouraging policymakers to undertake environmental action
Expand environmental businesses
  • Advised customers to try carbon offset printing services, paperless solutions and other environmentally conscious options

COP21

COP21

Highly regarded for its long-term environmental conservation activities, Ricoh was chosen as the official partner of the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations’ Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21) held in Paris, France.
Ricoh provided integrated document solutions that reflected environmental considerations and ensured security. We provided round-the-clock support for approximately 180 remanufactured MFPs and energy-efficient printers that supported the printing environment throughout the conference.

Energy-generating rubber

Energy-generating rubber

Piezoelectric materials generate power in response to applied mechanical strain. Major piezoelectric materials include ceramics and polymers, but these materials cannot be used for all applications and have problems associated with output performance. Ricoh developed Energy-Generating Rubber, a new material that is more flexible and generates as much power as conventional piezoelectric materials. Commercialization of Energy-generating Power is under way for use as a sensor in many different applications.

EcoVadis

EcoVadis

For two years in a row, Ricoh has received gold rating from EcoVadis, a French company that researches suppliers’ CSR activities. We satisfy customers’ demands for sustainability.
EcoVadis assesses suppliers from 110 countries and across150 business sectors on their corporate policies, initiatives, and achievements. Ricoh ranks within the top 5% among all companies surveyed.
